My wife and I dined in during lunch rush the Friday before Christmas weekend. Seated promptly but the food took a while getting out. Our server mentioned a large party just came in before us so the kitchen was backed up. She comped our appetizer just for the long wait. Would gladly return.
Three of went to The Wolf, while visiting a friend. The neighborhood restaurant apparently is a local favorite. The one page menu had some interesting selections. We had Fried Brussels Sprouts in sweet and spicy sauce as appetizer. It delicious. Main course - Pan Seared Branzino and Burger with Russian dressing and Fries were also delicious.
Only negative was, (being seated near the bar) decibel level was very high đ.
Make sure you ask to be seated away from the bar when making reservations.
Went here for our anniversary and really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. The staff was kind and accommodating, we got ribeye steaks, and the coffee dessert was delicious! Great for a date night.
Wow!!! My husband and I came to visit our aunt in Oakland this weekend. The goal of the visit is to have a wonderful time with new experiences. My cousin was also visiting, and he planned the entire weekend for us! Our 2nd night of dinner included the The Wolf Restaurant! This was my husbandâs and I first-time eating here, but it's a favorite of my aunt's. The Wolf did not disappoint! Everything we ordered was great! Even their peppermint tea is great, and a palate cleansing as I moved from one course to the next. This wasn't why I ordered it, so it was a welcomed surprise because we shared a variety of meals amongst our table. I'm pretty sure you must make reservations because this place was very busy.
In celebration of my 10 million views on Google maps reviews.
About 45 years ago when I was about 14 years old, some kids tried to bully someone at a local park and I stepped in and gave them hell.
I didn't know it, but at the time. Michael Wilde, founder of the Bay Wolf restaurant, was watching me stick up for his sons who were being bullied by some local bullies.
I developed a relationship with him over the years, even trying to work there on more than one occasion which he allowed once or twice, but then quickly fired me telling me, " look. You're a musician. Do music!" He was right, I did, and it worked out like crazy.
I stuck my head in here tonight out of nostalgia, looking for a place to celebrate my 10 million views on Google maps, but the smell of the food drew me in, the executive chef has authored some of the greatest dishes currently served in Oakland, the service is completely on point at a level that you'd have to experience to understand, and the kitchen and staff are a living, breathing, throbbing organism, beautifully functional, with a heartbeat and a mission.
This is the high class Novell cuisine that made Oakland and the Bay area famous.
(Some might say Berkeley, but Michael was always on another track from Alice to begin with, and I was there to witness it so don't mess with me)
I stepped in and asked to eat at the bar, ordering the heirloom tomato salad, which completely blew me away, and was so beautiful. I really had a hard time disturbing it to enjoy it. The tomato, hints of pesto and olive oil, savory tomatoes and burrata cheese, all flowed together so well that I asked for some bread to sop up what was left over.
My main dish was the rotisserie chicken, succulent and tender floating in a small layer of what I can only call. Yummy chicken juice, (is there any really "high class" way to approach chicken? I don't think so. This is food for the working class no matter how you plate it) the portion was generous and I ended up taking half of it home.
Throughout the night I enjoyed three glasses of Luli Pinot noir from Monte Linda vineyards, the perfect subtle accompaniment to these flavors, and finished up my meal with their delicious lemon cake, served with blueberries, and a small scoop of homemade gelato.
Details really make the meal for me, like the fact that they were serving fresh Acme bread with homemade butter, and that everyone I talked to seem to have an intimate understanding of the menu.
This place is nostalgic for me because it is one of the first places that I discovered fine cuisine under the tutelage of Michael, and through the years, I learned a lot about life, politics, human dynamics, and spirit, from watching him handle the restaurant and watching employees deal with one another and the public. This place was a school for me.
While not inexpensive, this place is the spot that you bring someone to for a special meal, and the environment, is quiet, inviting, with an open kitchen design that allows you to see what's going on.
This place, along with Corso in Berkeley, is among my favorite fine dining experiences in the East Bay and I cannot recommend it highly enough for those that appreciate the extra quality, care, and attention to detail that go into every meal at establishments like this, of which there are not very many.
Six and a half stars.
Thank you, Michael.
Had dinner here last night and the food was spectacular. From the burrata to oysters, the gnudi was phenomenal. The duck leg was spectacular. For dessert we got chocolate mousse bomb and the apple cider doughnut cake and they were delectable! The service was pleasant and it was well priced.
My rating is mostly based on the service. I went with my coworkers for an early dinner. They told us in advance we must be there at 5:15 or will lose the reservation. The waiter starts the dinner with we only get a set time and then we need to leave. Not very welcoming. Then the delivery of food took over 30 minutes. He kept reminding us that we needed to leave soon. Then dessert was slow to be delivered. Icing on the cake was he intro the table next to us with a âtake your time to order.â Food was very good. Black cod, steak, Brussels sprouts. Somewhat limited vegetarian options.
Stopped by for lunch at the Wolf. This building has a great look and feel to it. Service was spot on and it was a nice but somewhat uneven meal.
The popover sounded great so I started there and was surprised when it came sprinkled with so much cheese. This made it a little messy to eat and it was huge. The outside tasted great but as I worked my way to the inside, it lacked salt and butter. They graciously brought out butter upon request but it was cold making it hard to spread.
Tried the amanté cocktail because well the ingredient combination in this drink seemed amazing. The drink itself was a little weak and could have used something to make it a bit more sweet; grapefruit is a little bitter after all. The flavor did get better however as it further developed in the glass.
The real star and saviour here was the fried fish sandwich. It was phenomenal. It was bursting with flavor, juiciness, lemon, and so on. I highly recommend it and so do the staff for good reason.
Overall, I like this restaurant and would be interested in returning to try their other mains.
